The Antimacassar

Greye La Spina

The life of Greye La Spina (1880–1969) was one of bizarre variety. She was born Fanny Greye Bragg when her father, a Methodist clergyman, was seventy. He died two years later, so she barely knew him. She married when she was eighteen. Her first husband was in the shipping business and they travelled throughout Europe. Alas he died in a shipping accident in 1901, leaving Fanny to raise their young daughter. She remarried, and had another child, but that marriage soon failed. Her third husband was Robert La Spina, Baron di Savuto. Alas, money did not come with the title, and he developed a debilitating condition becoming an invalid. Fanny became the primary wage earner, undertaking photography, bookkeeping, typing services for writers and as a master weaver, designing tapestries.

Her first stories were for the legendary The Thrill Book in 1919, which included the werewolf tale “The Wolf of the Steppes”. She sold to several other pulps before her Weird Tales debut with “The Tortoise Shell Cat” in 1924, Many of her stories involve shape-changers—werewolves, vampires, were-cats! Her first serial, “Invaders from the Dark” (1925), includes a seductive Russian shape-changer. Arguably her best werewolf tale is the novella “The Devil’s Pool” (1932). In the following story, from later in her career, La Spina uses her knowledge of weaving to provide a warning to others.
